In travelling to work, I travel by highway, Metro, and then by foot the few blocks back and forth from the station to my office. Lunch usually involves a couple of blocks of walking as well.
This is for the most part a good thing; it exposes me to sunlight, relatively fresh air, and the outside world. The additional mental stimulation is surely beneficial as well.
The downside to this, of course, is the people. Idiots who see me coming, then walk straight at me despite the entire sidewalk being clear. Panhandlers, occasionally aggressive. Loud obnoxious people who aren't specifically out to be idiots, but are because of the aforementioned adjectives. Drivers who, when the light turns red, drive into the intersection anyway, blocking the entire cross street from moving out of some sense of entitlement.
I try to read while I walk, which at least gives me a reason/excuse to ignore the rest of the world, but every day I go outside into that miserable mass of humanity I'm reminded of my utter conviction that the world would be a far better place if we wiped the lower rungs of humanity off the face of it.
