For the past week or so my neck has been stiff as can be and painful enough to cause me grief nearly constantly. This happens to me fairly frequently, but this episode seems to be a particularly bad one, beginning as it did with my neck muscles quite literally locking so tight it felt like someone had pounded me in the back of the head with a hammer. It left me literally gibbering in pain. Since then, my muscles haven't relaxed since.

I've tried hot water (showers, bottles, washcloths), massages, massagers, stretches, I've even rearranged my work desk for better ergonomics, but no improvement. Occasionally when I stretch in just the right way, I can feel some muscles relax. It's blissful. Meanwhile, I chain-gulp ibuprofen and wait for my body to settle down.

Last weekend sucked, with [livejournal.com profile] tigerphoenix getting food poisoning from HER OWN BIRTHDAY CAKE. Her inability to have a good birthday makes me sad.

I was going to write about more things here, but I forgot them. :(

Oh geeze! You poor thing(s).

My neck gets like that sometimes... I don't know how you feel about alcohol, but I find wine very helpful. (Like, a quarter-glass, every hour or so. Just enough to get the muscles to remember how to relax.) I suppose other beverages would work as well.

Kava kava is extremely helpful too, but without the mental side effects of alcohol.

Hope you feel better soon!

Alcohol and I get along poorly. It tastes TERRIBLE to me, and I can detect it in even tiny quantities unless it's hidden under a lot of sweet or heavy tastes. Wine is right out for me.

Left side, mostly?

Why can't I practice medicine without a license?

A strong combination of local paralytics and anesthetics, followed by pressure point therapy, very hot washcloths, and long-term chiropractic care would be my strategy. A good dose of opiates might be warranted beforehand, so that you don't care quite as much about the rest.

Of course, if I were really an MD, I'd be terrified of being sued...

Mmm, paralytics and anaesthetics, that sounds heavenly right about now. Sadly, my neck is resisting all massage efforts (I've tried some pressure point work to ineffect) or washcloths right now.

I know this is a little counterintuitive, but have you tried icing your neck? It's been freaking awesome for my tension headaches.

I've been considering it as the tension lasts, in the hopes that it could soothe any inflammation or damage that's come about because of it all. I haven't yet gotten around to it, though. It's really hard for me to convince myself to sit around doing nothing in the very limited time I have to myself in the evening.

Don't sit around doing nothing. Just prop the ice against the back of your neck with a pillow, then play video games or something. Yeah, you might have trouble playing WoW, but you don't have to be reduced to doing absolutely nothing.

Most of the time when I try this it ends up not working so well, mainly because I'm reasonably fidgety. I blame the ADHD, but sitting still in general is not so easy. :)

Self-mummify with the cold pack against the back of your neck? ^^
