I just read a research paper on the Ultima Online economy and, despite having never played the game, found it useful and informative.

This is going on my geek-cred resume.

I have cited articles on that topic in my own research paper for a strategic marketing class. My paper was titled "The Ramifications of Moore's Law on In-Game Advertising." I think the program was happy that I wasn't doing another project on pornography.

The ultimate reference, though, had to be:

Buckingham, D. & Sefton-Green, J. (2003). "Gotta Catch 'em All: structure, agency and pedagogy in children's media culture", Media, Culture & Society, Vol. 25, 379-399.

which was the Most. Comprehensive psychological, sociological, and business examination of Pokemon. Evar.
