I spent the weekend working security at Tekkoshocon, which also happens to be my first anime con experience. It rocked, one of those events which changes you in subtle but definitely noticeable ways. Don't ask me to define better, I don't think I can.

I definitely hope to work security next year; I think the con was so fun because I was working. I got to work line duty at the dealer's room, "keep an eye on" the game and video rooms, and generally wander around with authority. I didn't get to see a lot of things because of that, like some videos I might have wanted to see, or the entire cosplay show, but I did get to see some totally twisted Flash cartoons based on video games. And there were a lot of impressive costumes. Rikku from FFX2 seems very popular.

(Incidentally, one of the most entertaining moments of the con came while watching the dealers' room, when a Rikku stepped on a Lulu's robe. So inadvertantly in character. "Rikku you clutz!" )

I think the next con I go to, I want to cosplay as Gourry. Those of you who've seen me know how damn appropriate this is, although it'd necessitate me bleaching my hair. Then I'd just have to get the right clothes, whip up some armor somewhere... It would really be awesome if I could make a Sword of Light. What I can envision doing is making a sword hilt out of a hollow material like pipe, putting a flashlight in it, and then getting a sword blade made out of plastic... But that's all just, heh heh, pipe dreams.

All in all, a fun weekend!

The Parable of Coyote and the Trees
As told by Coyote:

So one day way long ago I met the first adventurous tree. Now, the first adventurous tree was slow and boring. I don't know why that is. All adventurous trees are slow and boring, it's like a natural physical law. Anyway, this was back in the days where trees could move, they all moved. That's why the first adventurous tree *was* the first adventurous tree, because it said, "Hey, I'm gonna take root." So it did, and it rocked. The sun was shining, the dirt was good, water was coming up through the roots -- being rooted was easy and cool.

So then I came along, and said, "Hey, that tree can't move!" And I gave it the whizzing of its life.

Follow up to the story! I once met the world's oldest tree. The world's oldest tree, being the world's oldest tree, decided, "Hey, I'm going to take root." So it did, and it rocked. The sun was shining, the dirt was good, water was coming up through the roots -- being rooted was easy and cool.

So then I came along, and said, "Hey, that tree can't move!" Walked on up to it, and it dropped the biggest fucking branch ever on my head. I was out for a week.

So the lesson is, when you're young, keep moving around. When you get old enough to drop big fucking branches on people's heads, THEN you can take root.
