I think there is some sort of power inherent in an electric guitar.
I don't know what it is, but no other instrument seems to evoke sheer energy in me. I'm not saying other instruments are not good in their own ways -- I like classical music, for example. But the electric guitar seems to have an element of... well, energy to it.
Right now I'm listening to "The God That Failed." But this goes for a great number of songs. The electric guitar seems to have an element of screaming to it. A regular instrument is quiet, sonorous, smooth. An electric guitar is loud, harsh, violent.
Some people tell me that they can't stand heavy metal music because it grates on their nerves. (- Human) I think people like that simply don't fit into the paradigm of heavy metal -- the music is designed to get on your nerves, true, but rather than resist it, you're supposed to throw yourself into it. Let it flow through you, let the energy take you!
I love S&M.
Okay, now that you're done laughing at that... I mean the Metallica album. I don't know why classical instruments mesh so well with heavy metal, but damn. I wish there was more music like this.
I wish I could play the electric guitar. It seems like the perfect instument for me, and perhaps that's why it appeals to me so much. A lot of instruments sound best when the musician is pouring their soul into them -- perhaps it's just because the electric guitar sounds exactly like what I'd want pouring my soul out to sound like. Loud. Violent. Energy.
