Hey, [livejournal.com profile] cyfis

Tales of Eternia was renamed to Tales of Destiny II in North America because Mattel owns the copyright on the term "Eternia" in relation to the He-Man line of toys.

Thought that might interest you. It's much less cynical than we had thought...

That's actually really interesting.

And it explains why the rest of the games didn't follow the same trend.

What's this?

Okay. So the "Tales" series from Namco is a roleplaying series that generally shares similar gameplay and styles amongst the series. The original Tales game, Tales of Phantasia, didn't make it to the states until relatively recently; the first one we saw was Tales of Destiny. A few years later, the next game in the series, Tales of Eternia, showed up in America as Tales of Destiny II. Problem is, there IS a Tales of Destiny 2, which is a direct sequel to the original ToD. [livejournal.com profile] cyfis and I had spent some time trying to figure out why on earth Namco would rename it like that, and eventually figured that the name had been changed to directly appeal to people who'd played ToD and would have wanted to play a sequel. But it turns out as above.

Oh! Maybe if I'd read it properly the first time... For a moment there at some point you had me thinking someone had gone and released a He-Man video game. Jamie's all obsessed with He-Man.
