I had an interview/test/thing with EchoStar/Dish Network today. They're recruiting pretty heavily. I knew I had the job for sure when I saw people walking in in jeans, sweaters, and T-shirts. One rule that has always served me well: always dress up for interviews. It makes a very good impression.
But, doom and despair! they want me to work on Friday evenings. Friday evenings are LARP night -- I run Mage and attend Garou. Now, this would seem like a no-brainer -- good pay and advancement vs. a hobby. You'd think the choice would be clear. And it was. No job for me!
This no doubt seems irresponsible, but I have reasons for it. First is the committment that I made when I agreed to run the Mage game. I signed up for at least a year, implicitly, and in truth I'd like to do it for longer if given the option (and a decent ST staff, which I already have -- say,
siliconrose, we need to meet before next game and talk about that. Are you still up for me popping by on Friday?). I've been in a position where the ST stepped down abruptly, and it wasn't pleasant. Furthermore, I have a responsibility to live up to my obligations, both to the players and to myself. I honor my committments and my responsibilities.
Second is the fact that LARP is one of the few social activities I have right now. In fact, the only one, and often the only chance I get to see my friends. I can't exist without friendship. Then, too, it's one of the few things
tigerphoenix and I can do together, and one of the primary reasons she comes to visit me.
Lastly? I'm a gamer. I don't think anyone, except The Goon Squad knows how much of a gamer I am. I'd gladly and happily be at every LARP around here, plus several weeknight or weekend games, if I had the opportunity. I love to game.
The last job offer I got is sounding more and more tempting. I'm calling back tomorrow, getting a few more details. It's possible that based on the fact that I have a background in psychology, they may offer more than just $8 -- or maybe they'll raise it after a probation period. I don't know; I'll ask and hope.
Meanwhile, fight off depression. Bleah.
